Butter Me Up Organics Toilet Tabs Review 2021 | Eco-friendly, zero-waste toilet cleaner pods
The Top Line: Not a buy. While we are a fan overall of Butter Me Up Organics and their commitment to zero-waste, we did not think the efficacy of Butter Me Up Organics Toilet Tabs or the price point warrants a buy recommendation from us.
The Breakdown:
Cost & Products: $13.95 for a box of 12 toilet tabs; we are instructed to use weekly, so roughly a 3 month supply.
How ‘Clean’ Is This? Very! Organic, non-GMO, no sulfates, phthalates or parabens, no synthetic dyes or fragrances.
Packaging: Recycled packaging, labels printed on recycled paper, use of eco-friendly soy-based inks.
Purchasing & Shipping: We purchased on the Butter Me Up Organics website.
What’s Your Impact? It depends on how much toilet cleaner you are using - certainly this option removes the need for plastic packaging, as well as no chemicals in the formula.
The Experience
Context: We have tried various toilet cleaners but haven’t found a zero-waste option that actually cleans our toilet well. We have generally ended back up with Seventh Generation’s liquid toilet bowl cleaner.
We love just how zero-waste this product is - simple ingredient list of just 5 ingredients!
We are instructed to just drop it into the toilet, no mention of scrubbing.
The product started fizzing and we left it to sit in the toilet for a little while. When we came back and flushed it, we were disappointed to see that the toilet wasn’t any cleaner — we are confused, do we need to use the brush?
The Cost
We compared the cost of Butter Me Up Organics Toilet Tabs with a number of mainstream and ‘greener’ toilet cleaner options include Lysol, Chlorox, Scrubbing Bubbles and Seventh Generation, as well as with two zero-waste options, Truman’s Reporting for Doodie (our review) and EC30 Toilet cleaner (our review).
Money Report: Butter Me Up Organics Toilet Tabs are slightly less expensive than the other two zero-waste options, but still crazy expensive when compared with the other options.
The Good:
✔ Simple ingredient list — just 5 ingredients!
✔ Organic, non-GMO, no sulfates, phthalates or parabens, no synthetic dyes or fragrances
✔ Recycled packaging, labels printed on recycled paper, use of eco-friendly soy-based inks
The Bad:
✗ Pretty pricey to be using on a weekly basis
✗ Product did not work as instructed (did not seem to clean the toilet by just dropping it in the toilet — we left it there for a little while to make sure as well before we flushed)
Our Recommendation: Not a buy. While we are a fan overall of Butter Me Up Organics and their commitment to zero-waste, we did not think the efficacy of Butter Me Up Organics Toilet Tabs or the price point warrants a buy recommendation from us.
We're on a mission to reduce our personal carbon footprint with small, hopefully easy, changes in our home to fight against climate change. This means we're looking for products that may be all natural, ideally zero waste, reusable or compostable -- while still being affordable!
