Aveeno Kids Mineral Sunscreen Stick Review 2023 | Mineral, reef-friendly sunscreen

Aveeno Kids Mineral Sunscreen Stick Review 2023 | Mineral, reef-friendly sunscreen

The Top Line: GREAT buy if you like the convenience of a stick, but we want to try more. We’re a fan of Aveeno Kids Mineral Sunscreen Stick for Kids - for three key reasons: (1) the stick form factor is great when you’re on the go and you have a wriggling kid, our son actually LIKES it (2) sweat and water resistance means a little more time between re-applications (3) great for sensitive skin. Price point is very reasonable for stick form factor, but certainly more expensive than a liquid sunscreen. Biggest downside is that it does leave a white cast (photos below), so we like to keep some Pipette in the bag too.

The Breakdown:

  • Cost & Products: $12.57 for 1.5oz stick on Amazon

  • How ‘Clean’ Is This? Kid-friendly ingredients - natural sunscreen that uses 100% mineral, naturally sourced zinc oxide for broad spectrum UVA/UVB sun protection, and formulated with pure oat essence. Free of parabens, pthalates and fragrance.

  • Packaging: Unfortunately does come in a plastic container.

  • Purchasing & Shipping: I purchased on Amazon

  • Good to know: Water resistance for up to 80 minutes! Stick form factor makes it very travel friendly.

  • What’s Your Impact? Chemicals commonly found in sunscreen cause permanent DNA damage to coral. Key here is to look for biologically toxic chemicals such as oxybenzone, paraben, phthalate, and avobenzone — we did not find any of these on the ingredients list.

The Experience

Context: As a mom with a young toddler, it seems I am constantly reapplying sunscreen while he runs away from me. While we have obviously loved Pipette, the stick form factor piqued my interest:

  • Quick and easy to get this on skin (the stick is not too hard)

  • Our toddler actually likes trying to put some on himself!

  • No scent which we appreciate, and clinically tested on sensitive skin

  • It is sweat/water resistant, so helpful in reducing reapplications

  • Particularly great to have a few of these for travel that can be packed in carryon easily

  • There is a white cast unfortunately, but we are OK with this given the convenience factor

Overall, happy with the experience!

The Cost

We compared Aveeno Kids Mineral Sunscreen Stick for Kids with other Mineral Stick SPFs on the market and found the price to be really reasonable. However, it is worth noting that is it difficult to compare with a liquid formulation that is much less expensive.

Money Report:

The Good:

Unscented

100% mineral

Soft enough to spread easily (but not too soft that its messy)

Stick form factor easier when kid-wrangling

Water resistant for up to 80 minutes

✔ Free of parabens, pthalates, and fragrance

✔ Formulated with pure oat essence

✔ Kid friendly, particularly on sensitive skin

✔ Travel friendly

The Bad:

White cast

Stick form factor is more expensive in general

We're on a mission to reduce our personal carbon footprint with small, hopefully easy, changes in our home to fight against climate change. This means we're looking for products that may be all natural, ideally zero waste, reusable or compostable -- while still being affordable!
