Urban Oreganics Dry Shampoo for Dark Hair 2020 Review | Zero Waste Dry Shampoo

Urban Oreganics Dry Shampoo for Dark Hair 2020 Review | Zero Waste Dry Shampoo

The Top Line: NOT a buy. We liked it ok, but probably not worth the cost.

We wanted to like Urban Oreganics Dry shampoo for Dark hair: it’s a zero-waste, all natural alternative to your typical aerosol dry shampoo. Unfortunately, it was a bit too expensive for our taste.

The Breakdown:

  • Cost & Products: $15 for 2oz jar or $3 for a sample

  • How ‘Clean’ Is This? Super clean w/three ingredients: kaolin clay, arrowroot powder, cacao powder.

  • Packaging: The normal size comes in a glass jar while the small sample pouch

  • Purchasing & Shipping: Via Zero Waste Store; shipping is plastic free and free $35+

  • Good to Know: Also available for “light” hair. The sample is super hard to work with …

  • Coupons: Not at this time

  • Whats Your Impact? Zero plastic and zero chemicals. Most dry shampoos either come in aerosol form or in a plastic bottle. This one is neither, meaning your impact is significantly less than typical dry shampoos

The Efficacy

We have used plain old baby powder up through to Klorane non-aerosol for our in-between days and we have dark hair with streaks of grey.

  • So, it is as dark as cocoa powder, which is to say not super dark

  • We guess it masks the color a lot better than the white - we have just been so used to the off-grey coloring of other dry shampoo

  • It smells really nice… exactly like cocoa

  • We liked how it worked — we’d say it was similar to a non-aerosol that blended a bit better (no flakes)

  • We used an old powder brush to apply ours since it was in a little baggie. Result: cocoa powder everywhere. Maybe try putting it onto an small dish instead.

The Cost

YMMV with this one, so we are going to attempt to just normalize per ounce:

  • Urban Oreganics (2oz) $15 | Per Ounce: $7.50

  • Soap and Salve (4.5oz) $18.50 | Per Ounce: $4.11

  • Batiste (6.7oz) $9 | Per Ounce: $1.34

  • Klorane (3.2oz) $20 | Per Ounce: $6.25

  • Oribe (6oz) $48 | Per Ounce: $8.00

  • LuLu Organics (4oz) $28 | Per Ounce: $7.00

Thoughts: So expensive to be green here. The end.

The Good:

Smells like cocoa

Blends in better for darker hair

No plastic!

Three natural ingredients

The Bad:

✗ Pretty pricey

Given how fine the powder was , it got all over the counter tops (look at my white ones above!)

Our Recommendation:
Despite smelling wonderful because of the three all- natural ingredients, given how expensive Urban Oreganics Dry Shampoo is, we have to pass on the recommendation. We will keep looking

We're on a mission to reduce our personal carbon footprint with small, hopefully easy, changes in our home to fight against climate change. This means we're looking for products that may be all natural, ideally zero waste, reusable or compostable -- while still being affordable!
